Williamsburg, Virginia Day 4

Went to a working plantation.  Had a group tug of war against these oxen.  We lost.

Re-enactor making 'chicken pudding' in a kitchen that was quite warm.

Knowledgable man that has grown tobacco on this plantation for 13 years.  He had interesting explanations about how the plant grows and how it is processed.  This is one of the plants that drove slavery for over 250 years.

Tobacco plant nearly ready to be picked.

We visited several of the buildings in town today, as well as a working plantation.  The re-enactors are passionate about their jobs, and do some marvelous work.  We saw 5 re-enactors today give their interpretation of the history.  The man that explained how slavery worked was an African-American man dressed as a slave.  He demonstrated how the violence was inflicted on slaves to keep them working, and gave one of what I thought was the most honest explanations of slavery I have ever heard.  He was not afraid to very frankly explain the extremely ugly truth of slavery, and it was a powerful lesson.

No rain, and the weather has been quite mild.  Tomorrow we learn about currency and the economy in detail, which I am eager to learn.  I have learned how pieces of eight work, and the difference between a guinea, a pound, a shilling, a pence and a dinari.

For the final gathering of the night we heard some storytellers.  Got a good new story that includes a graveyard and runaway slaves.

My Virginia accent is improving.
